Pat Menzies Timeline

1948

Pat Menzies was born. Pat’s Dad Pat was from New Zealand and his Mum Freda was English. They emigrated from the UK after WW2

1955

Like many Kiwi lads Pat loved rugby. He also hated shoes. In these early days he would leave his shoes in the letterbox on his way to school. Freda would not have been impressed if she ever found out.

1966

When Pat was 19 he started working at Spencer Wade in the Canterbury Arcade as a runner. He quickly became Manager of the store and enjoyed the atmosphere and energy of working in the central city.

1975

Pat had the opportunity to purchase Spencer Wade, so he pulled all his savings together and took a risk as the youngest retailer on Queen St at the time launching Pat Menzies Shoes.

1980's

Enter the 80’s and a local shoe rep bought Pat a bag of Dr. Martens shoes to view that no one else wanted ‘they were ugly things’. Pat, having already heard about Dr Martens took one look and placed the first order for New Zealand – never to look back on a brand that is still strongly aligned with Pat Menzies values.

1990's

Word of mouth spread and Pat’s store had become the underground destination to get iconic footwear brands. Pat introduced more brands to his shelves - Converse, Birkenstock, Vans, New Balance. Pat built a team around him with good honest values and a genuine passion for service.

2000

This hard working team had to keep up with demand as they became shoe experts offering combined service and knowledge of over 100 years. You might recognise a couple of faces - they still work in the store!

2012

Good went to great and the store had to expand, partnering with Converse to bring the first ever concept store to New Zealand. Offering over 100 styles of your favourite styles of Chuck Taylors, One Star, Chuck 70 and seasonal styles.

2023

Several of our brand concept areas got a well-deserved lick of paint! Our Dr. Martens, Converse, Blundstone & Birkenstock walls are looking fresh and full of the latest product. Don't worry, our store still has the heritage charm everyone knows and loves!

TODAY

Today we are still the home of iconic shoe brands, classic styles, local experience and real service. We’ve always been your trusted shoe store. Our team are ready to help whenever you drop by Queen St or shop online.
