About Onitsuka Tiger
Onitsuka Tiger, the forerunner of ASICS, was founded in 1949 by Mr. Kichachiro Onitsuka, who was committed to promoting youth health and unity through sport. The company ethos was centered around the Latin proverb “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano” – meaning “sound mind, sound body” – which later became the acronym ASICS.
Onitsuka Tiger’s first product was a basketball shoe, and has since created shoes for many sports, including running, track and field, wrestling, martial arts and more. The Onitsuka Tiger stripe was first introduced on the LIMBER shoe in 1966 during pre-olympic trials (for the upcoming 1968 Summer OIympics in Mexico City). The LIMBER is now known and still produced as the iconic MEXICO 66 sneaker, and the tiger stripes have become synonymous with premium performance in sport.
As Onitsuka Tiger grew to become ASICS and establish itself as a leading technical sports brand, the rich heritage of Onitsuka Tiger lived on, and was relaunched and in 2002 to bring old-school sports shoes to the forefront of sneaker fashion.
